The rise of the multi-polar world means that it is no longer sufficient to view globalization solely or mainly
through a Western-centric prism. By contrast, this study inverts the lens to understand what the multi-polar
world looks like from the standpoint of EMMs. It is the product of indepth interviews with more than 40 emerging-market business executives and experts from around the world, extensive secondary research and our experience of working with companies across the world.
The multi-polar world is characterized by increased economic interdependence across five key dimensions:
- Capital—the rapid growth of emerging economies as sources of outward foreign direct investment and destinations for portfolio investment.
- Talent—favorable demographics spurring rapid growth of emergingmarket workforces.
- Resources—increasingly intense competition for energy, commodities and raw materials.
- New consumers—rapid income growth creating up to a billion new consumers in emerging markets.
- Innovation—the emergence of new clusters of innovation and specialization in emerging economies.
