KPMG’s Data Loss Barometer
The main findings of the study include:
Most company data losses were caused by employees. Malicious insider leaks were up by more than 50% in the first six months of 2009. The increase was the most significant in the government sector.
Although the theft of laptops is still the most common of all data security breaches, the total number of such incidents has almost halved since 2008. There has also been a significant drop (of 20 percent) in the number of portable media that have gone missing, although cases are still all too common where personal data is inadequately protected.
The Data Loss Barometer has recorded almost 2,300 data loss incidents that have affected more than 700 million people. But, since the majority of breaches go unreported, this is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg.
