The energy plans of the Czech Republic are consistent with the European Union’s long-term strategies and targets aimed at improving energy efficiency and increasing the total proportion of energy generated from renewable sources (“RES”).

The forecast portion of gross energy consumption in CR sourced from RES is approximately 8 % in 2010, and the National Action Plan (see below) allows for a 5% increase on that figure in the coming decade. The greatest potential is expected to lie in biomass, but the sustainable development of the solar, wind and geothermic energy sectors is also considered.

In this issue, we present you with the legal and tax measures which are currently being introduced and which should result in the equal support and development of all renewable sources, emphasising secondary energy sources and the combined production of power and heat. New tax legislation will affect primarily existing investments.

A new Act on supported energy sources, which should completely supersede the existing act, should be considered both for existing and new investments into clean energy. It should come into force on 01.01.2012, but many of its provisions will be effective sooner. The act also sets out how the new rules will be applied to power plants that have already commenced operating.
