The exhibition is structured as an enormous game. Upon entry, children receive their personal savings card with a small amount of a virtual currency. They then manage that money at various stations of the exhibition, getting to know important situations related to money. At the various stations, they can make money, exchange it, save it, invest it, or donate it to a charitable cause. At multimedia quiz stations, children can test their newly acquired knowledge. The purpose of the exhibition is not only to show children the function of money in our society, but also the fact that it is important to manage it responsibly, and that not everything can be had for money. The concept and contents of the exhibition contributes, in an unconventional way, to increasing children’s financial literacy.
“Teachers praise the exhibition for the fact that playfulness is not an end in itself in this case. When playing a bank, children get to understand the meaning of terms such as credit or interest rate, which they often hear but have practically no idea what they mean,” says Ivana Pernicová, head of the Lecture Department of the Museum of the City of Prague.
The exhibition travels. It was created at the initiative of Erste Group, as a component of the sponsorship programme Added VALUE. It was developed by the Vienna ZOOM Children’s Museum in cooperation with the FRida & freD Children’s Museum in Graz. The exhibition was brought to the Czech Republic by Česká spořitelna in cooperation with the Museum of the City of Prague. Visitors can see it until 23 March 2014 at the Museum of the City of Prague (Na Poříčí 52, Prague 8).
