A Traveling Work: The Lobkowicz Collections Loans Rare Painting to Commemorate The Great War

On 27 February, the National Portrait Gallery in London opened a new exhibition entitled The Great War in Portraits, marking the centennial of the outbreak of World War I. One of the many works on display is a painting from The Lobkowicz Collections in Prague. The painting on loan, a portrait of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (1863-1914) by Theodor Breitwieser (18471930), is proudly showcased in the first exhibition room.

The exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery captures the time period of unprecedented events following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by 19-year old Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. But rather than presenting a military history of the War, the displayed works focus on the way the Great War was represented through portraits of those involved, an approach that has never been previously adopted. This dynamic and engaging display is made possible by various loans from the international art community to commemorate this significant moment in history. The Lobkowicz Collections is proud to be part of this exhibition that will run from 27 February to 15 June 2014.
